Rogue MoversBuyer Beware!Rogue movers break the law every day, preying on unsuspecting families who think they have found a great bargain. On the contrary, these families have walked into a nightmare. According to the American Moving and Storage Association, a membership organization based in Alexandria, VA, rogue movers begin their illegal practice by quoting an attractively low price. Upon arrival at the customer's new home, they demand a much higher fee. They threaten to hold the customer's household goods hostage until their inflated fee is paid. A Pennsylvania woman who was victimized by a rogue mover explained that the original quote from her movers had increased by over 400% by the time they arrived at her new home. This is not unusual. Since 1996, the number of consumer complaints against rogue movers that were logged with Better Business Bureaus has more than doubled -- from 2,970 to 6,900 complaints in 2001. Recently, there was good news in Florida for reputable movers when FBI agents arrested 72 individuals and shutdown 42 scam movers. It may be a drop in the bucket, but it is a beginning.
